Since its release in November of last year, OpenAI's ChatGPT has been used to compose cover letters, construct a children's book, and even assist students cheat on their essays.

The chatbot may be more powerful than we ever thought. Google discovered that, in theory, if the bot interviewed at the company, the search engine would hire it as an entry-level coder.

Amazon employees who tried ChatGPT said it does a "very good job" of addressing customer support concerns, is "great" at creating training papers, and is "very strong" at answering questions about company strategy.

Companies are taking notice. Both IBM and the British telecommunications company BT Group highlighted AI when announcing job losses — and saying that many would not return.

While a 2013 University of Oxford study indicated that AI might eliminate 47% of US occupations over the next 20 years, the estimate appears to be off the mark. According to a recent Goldman Sachs report, generative AI technologies might impact 300 million full-time employment worldwide, causing a "significant disruption" in the labour market.

However, Anu Madgavkar, a partner at the McKinsey Global Institute, told Insider that human judgement must be added to these technologies to avoid inaccuracy and bias. Users of ChatGPT discovered that the bot can provide false information, improperly answer coding questions, and make basic math blunders.

"We have to think about these things as productivity enhancing tools, as opposed to complete replacements," Madgavkar said.

Insider talked to experts and conducted research to compile a list of jobs that are at highest-risk for replacement by AI.
